I have never been a deeply religious person, but I have always had faith in God. I have a basic knowledge of the Bible and do believe that there is SOMETHING higher than us. I subscribe to the notion of Heaven and Hell and do believe that we are judged upon death. I also think that for every negative, purposeful action, there are consequences that are sometimes left to God. My question is what do people really mean when they say accept God into your life? How do I start a relationship with God? How do I pray properly? I don't want to just pray when I need something, but this is often the case. How do I show God that I thankful for my blessings? How do I receive Him?

For starters you have already accepted God into your life because you have openly admitted to always having a faith in Him.
When people accept God into their life they are saying just what you have said I know there is something bigger out there than me and my way of thinking. You have admitted to recognizing that there is a God and now your next step is to accept His son Jesus as your personal Savior. The bible says in John 3:16, 17, "For God so loved the world that he gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him (His Jesus son) shall not perish but have eternal life." This passage also goes on to say, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn (to pronounce guilty: convict) the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him (God's son) is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." Please email me if you need further clarity on this passage...anyway, to accept Jesus you can start out by repeating the sinners prayer as one of the other answers mentioned. This is another step. Once you've accepted Jesus as your personal savior you want to maintain a relationship with him by communicating to Him. This is a daily walk and journey. Like with any new thing it takes time and work. Your change comes from the inside out. It’s a heart change. You’ll begin to see that God deals with your heart.
Like with any relationship communication is a vital key. The more you talk and commune with the Savior you'll begin to gain a closeness and oneness with Him. Through prayer, reading and studying the bible and joining other believers in your faith in Christian fellowship (attending a church). You grow and gain strength corporately this way. This is also another way of showing God's love through serving, worshiping, and giving (not just financially but of your time). You are now pressing pass you (and all your own desires) and thinking of others, but not for you or in your name but for the cause of Christ and His name. Because Tambourine, it's the Lord who has made it possible for you to have breath to breathe and a life to live. It's because of Him that you have a great family; it's because of Him that you have employment and the means to give and share with others. Now you begin to just thank Him and bless Him for all He as has bestowed upon you. And you begin to do this daily you'll feel His peace. He'll begin to make paths clear for you. He'll open doors for you that were shut. You are on your way to eternal change. I’m praying for you that God gives you eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart to comprehend everything you are experiencing right now. Be blessed-

u ask Jesus into your heart, not God. and when you become a Christian (by accepting Jesus into your life) u become a witness. do nice things for ppl, tell ppl about Jesus, help ppl, basically try to act as Jesus would. u've probably heard the phrase "WWJD" 'What Would Jesus Do?". go to church, read your Bible and PRAY. my pastors say that anyone who doesn't pray, can't be a Christian. also, tithe, give of your time. my pastors also say, talk to God as though u were talking to ur best friend because God IS your best friend. or atleast he should be. he should be #1 in ur life (he should even be ahead of ur parents). and way you thank God for your blessings is, obviously u "thank" him (by talking to him and thanking him for it) and use the blessings for good and not evil. use ur blessings to further the kingdom. like, lets say u get $100 in the mail by someone u don't even know. first, u tithe (10%) and then with the other 90, u could put it towards buying a pizza and just giving it to someone for free (do u get it? God blessed u with $100 and then u use it to bless someone else with the pizza) there are sooooo many things u can do. u don't have to buy a pizza for someone or do something like that. it won't be a sin or anything but it would be an act of kindness and using using ur blessings from God nicely. u don't have to spend the whole $90 on that. buy a $10 pizza and then save the rest of the money or get urself something or do another act of kindness

hope this helped!

God bless

i disagree with 'DougLawrence' (who's comment is right below mine). u don't want to be a catholic, u want to be a Christian. catholic's believe they cango to heaven by doing good deeds, but there wrong. u have to accept Jesus into ur life for that to happen

When asked how to pray, I try to do it like Jesus did in The Lord's Prayer. I start off praising God, because his power and will are the ultimate need for everyone and everything to exsist. Next I thank Him for everything, then ask Him to forgive my sins and miscues. Then I ask Him to bless everyone, then I ask for specific help, such as healing a loved one or friend, give me patience and perseverance, and resistance of temptation. Then I thank him again, in Jesus' name, Amen.
You've already got a relationship with him. Remember, He is your father, He wants you to talk to Him. He wants you to ask him for favors. He wants our love more than anything. And give God his due, when anything good happens, thank Him. When something not so good happens, ask Him for help, and thank Him for getting you through it and any lesson learned from the experience, which may help you the next time a similar bump in the road comes along. Try to read a little in the bible. It may not always make sense, but most things will come to light eventually. I study a little everyday, and I sin a little everday. 25 years of studing and still learn something everyday.
And remember, teachers help a lot, be it at church, on T.V., the internet, but no one human being has all the right answers. We are all different, and think different. But your relation with God is just that, your personal relationship with God, no one elses.

Jesus said the Kingdom of Heaven is "within". Delve deep to find the meaning of this. The greatest Blessing of all is already in your possession, Life. You cannot change any aspect of the Life. All that we ever change is the "ideas" about the Life.Heaven and Hell are both states of mind that can be cultivated, hence lived, here. To find the blessing God has given you is what is known as God's Will.

The first thing to do is get into a good bible based church. You need the support of fellow worshippers that believe in the same fundamental truth that you do. The best thing I say about pray is to pray all the time. Not just when times are hard but when times are good. Pray for thanksgiving, pray for conviction,

Here-

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for your blessings Lord. Lord thank you for all that you have done in my life and all that you will do Lord God. God I know that I believe in you Lord God, I know that your teachings are the truth. I know that I want to spend eternity with you Lord God, in worship. Lord I ask that you come into my heart Lord. That you make my heart your's. I ask that you help me on my spiritual walk with you Lord God. I don't want to just know religion Lord God I want to know you. Please Lord live in my heart so that I can continue to glorify you.

Thank you Jesus

Amen

Anyway I just felt like praying with you, May God guide you through this time. Ask and you shall recieve.

You can do that all by yourself or with another believer. Just ask Jesus into your life and ask Him to forgive your sins. He is faithful and just to forgive all your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.

Whether or not you FEEL anything from that prayer, doesn't mean that it hasn't been accomplished, because it has! You are now a new creature in Christ. Completely forgiven!

The next thing is to learn more about Him by reading His Word, spend time with other believers if you can because that will make you stronger.

God bless you!!

I belong to the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints and for me personally my relationship with God started by parying night and morning, you want to thank him for what you have and then ask for more blessings in your life or something you need help with. I pray on my knees at my bed side morning and night. You need to address him properly by name. You are not praying to Jesus but to the Father. I believe they are 2 seprate people, each with their own body. But you end your pray in the name of Jesus Christ the son of God. Accepting God as part of your life means you need to try to become like him. Have no addictions and serve like he would go to church and learn more about him. But before you go to church pray and ask each one is true and try different faiths ans see where you are comfortable.

Absolutely!!! It was once whatever extra formal, but I used to speak to Him anything the rationale and considering I stored ahead to my possess ambition and wishes, while He gave me avertisements I stored none and did my manner going into increasingly trubles! Into an finish, inside a deep depresion, He stored my existence (!!!) the very moment I left away of all my deep wishes... There, empty center, I was once full of God's Light and Peace and Love - a whole New LIFE, a brand new frame, a New Vision over the beyond and the long run :) :) :) Yes, He is my Saviour!!!

You already know the answers-just keep growing as you are now. God will show you as you go along. Prayer is just talking to God. It is nothing fancy or elaborate. Simple heart felt words. Tell him your thankful every chance you get. You like it when someone tells you you did good. He is the same. I don't know you-but I pray for Gods people every day ,as I hope they are praying for me.

Some (but not all) Christians refer to "accepting God" as part of a formula for salvation. Others of us believe that God does the accepting and we're just grateful that he does.

You start a relationship with God by acknowledging His presence, which you've already done. You foster that relationship through prayer (speaking and listening), worship, study and practice.

Praying properly is thinking in terms of both speaking and listening to God. Any time you talk to God, it's a prayer. There isn't necessarily any "right" way to do it, as long as you also take time to "listen," not with your physical ears but with your mind and heart. Jesus taught us the Our Father, and that's always a good prayer to say as well as a good formula to follow. (Praise - Devote yourself to His will - Recognize His provision - Beg pardon for sin - Ask for preservation/holiness) In my faith tradition, we also have many, many, MANY prayers written by many saints over the years that have a great deal of value in differing circumstances. I used to eschew this type of prayer but now I find it very handy. Just because somebody else wrote it doesn't mean that I can't 100% mean it when I say it, too.

You show God you are thankful for your blessings by worship and by giving something back. Worship is best done in community with other believers, so I would suggest you find a church if you haven't already done so. You can also worship privately, but there is something important that happens when you worship in concert with others. Giving back usually means donating a portion of your earnings to your church or whatever other organization that you believe is doing the work of God on earth, volunteering your time and talent to your church or whatever other organization, etc. In my faith tradition, there is an emphasis on feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, ministering to the sick and dying, visiting the oppressed/imprisoned, working for social justice, burying the dead, etc., which we call "corporal works of mercy."

You have already received the Lord emotionally, intellectually and spiritual as evidenced by your belief in Him and your desire for more of Him. In my faith tradition, you can also receive Him physically through the Eucharist...which is a very lovely and life-changing experience, and I hope you have the opportunity and desire to do someday.
