It takes light 8 minutes to arrive on Earth from the sun because it takes the universe 8 minutes to compute how that light will appear to us. You can go faster than light because the computer simply can't operate fast enough to keep up.

How does this explain the universe at the quantum level? I've only read a few things about the strange stuff going on at that level, but curious how the seeming contridictions with the rest of the universe are explained by the computer program running things.

At the current rate of computing technology, some scientists think they will be able to create an entire universe in a computer programme that is almost indistinguishable from the real thing in around 2 - 500 years. That means that there is a 50% chance that the lives we are living now are just a computer generated re- run of the past. A bit like the matrix but not as we don't have real bodies anywhere.

Well I think thats flawed. Wouldn't technology be increasing constantly for this supercomputer, as it is here on earth? In that case the processor speed should be going up up up gradually, not remaining constant.

I agree that the underlying rules of the universe are simple, but that whole computer processing thing seems very dated to me - i.e. it's what is advanced to us now, so that is how we explain other complex things. It also doesn't seem very simple to me.

Yeah but I thought that galaxies are complex atoms in the matter of a larger universe and the the atoms in our body are galaxies in a smaller universe....
