I used to give boyfriends gifts I wanted them to have -- not gifts they actually wanted (flowers would fall into this category, as would "nice" clothes, relationship books, romantic music, and crap like candles). The result, inevitably, was that (1) boyfriend was disappointed; (2) his response, no matter how polite and gracious, was disappointing to me because it didn't mirror my enthusiasm; and (3) bitterness would ensue.
I have since learned the error of my ways and The-Boyfriend-Now-Husband kindly taught me the guidelines of gift giving in the World of Men. These guidelines include, but are not limited to, helpful tips like:
(1) gift cards to a store the boy likes do not reflect a lack of thought by the giver;
(2) it's OK to "wrap" a gift in the bag it came in with the receipt still inside (because he won't notice, much less admire, the fancy gift bag and coordinating ribbon and tissue you spent $10 on anyway);
(3) the electronic thing (game, gadget, toy) that he wants is a GREAT gift even if it will become obsolete in 6 months;
(4) don't spend the $4 on a Hallmark card; tell him you love him on regular paper- he will like it just as much;
(5) develop a network of gift advisors -- these will usually be his brothers and buddies. Trust them, even though you think their suggestions are inane, lack sentiment, and don't adequately reflect your affection for your boyfriend;
(6) for God's sake, don't buy him clothes as a gift unless it's something he has requested. This was a revelation. My husband hates to shop. If I give him clothes for his birthday or Christmas, he is quietly disappointed. But if I shop for him the other 363 days a year, he is so stoked that he didn't have to go to the mall that he will pretty much smilingly wears anything I get him. Weird how that works.

I am sorry but I disagree. I know for sure that there are men who DO like to receive flowers, even though they might not show their excitement as we would like them to. But deep inside, they do like it. I am not generalizing, but for sure, there are guys who do like flowers (why not send him One flower, or even a plant?). I have gifted men flowers and it was right here, a long time ago, that I conducted a poll asking if a man would like to rec. flowers. I got a LOT of answers that said "go for it". I did, and I did not regret. Neither did he. I could see he appreciated it and felt special.
Girls, dont jump to general conclusions. Every guy is different.

I'm female and don't give a hoot about getting flowers myself. I would never consider giving them to my man, lol. I can think of a lot of other "just because" gifts that he would enjoy much more.

You are right. Men and flowers don't mix. They don't know how to appreciate them and less how to care for them.
