An ambassador represents his own country abroad. The ambassador receives his instructions from his government and puts them into practice in the country he resides in. He's the first to talk to when the two countries have issues.

An ambassador is the representative of the president of a nation abroad.

His or her job is to represent the policies of his or her country, and to promote those national interests.

Their job is to handle foreign relations with that country. They act on behalf of the president.
