First off, the cancer that would have been seen from a barium meal (we call it an esophagram in California), would be cancer of the esophagus or stomach. Esophageal and gastric cancer is pretty darn rare.

The black you saw in your stomach would be air. When you were standing, the top of your stomach (fundas) should have had black in it, as air rises. As you lay down, the air is spread out throughout your stomach. You probably didn't see much fluid or water. The white color was the barium.

The things we find regularly on esophagrams are ulcers, reflux and hiatal hernias. I am not sure I have ever seen a gastric or esophageal cancer on an esophagram, and I have been assisting the radiologist with these exams for about 15 years.

Thats right it would show up black if there is nothing wrong. Any lumps, tumours, etc would show up as white!! Bit strange you have to wait a week for results! Perhaps they have to send off the x-rays to a speacialist to be on the safe side.

If there was anything there to worry about, you wouldn't be at home you'd be in a ward.

relax, everything will be ok.
