In my humble, but well experienced opinion, the best beer in the world is called Kelt and is from the Czech Republic. It is a stout type beer but smoother and easier to drink than Guinness. Other contenders are Paulaner Dunkel: Eridnger DunkelHobgoblin: Bishop's Finger: Hambleton Zulu and York :Legionnaires Ghost for dark beers.
For lagers, Paulaner, Moretti Doppio Malto, Peroni Gran Riserva, Czech Budvar are all good.
Some fruit beers are nice: Fruli Strawberry beer, Stamford Apricot Beer and Timmermanns Peche are all refreshing on a hot day.
Someone mentioned Innes and Gunn - that is very nice with a sort of toffee/caramel/vanilla fudge taste to it...
But as a rule of thumb, the local brew is always generally going to be starting at an advantage - hence all overseas lagers which are brewed 'under licence' in the country you drink it in are substandard since every beer recipe is formulated to suit the local water supply - using different water gives an inferior taste... thats why Guinness have quit producing beer outside Dublin... good on them...
PS good luck to all the Stella fans - hope your wives have learned self defence...

Ever since I tasted Stella, I have not looked back. But if they sell a dodgy pint, I have no problems moving to Guinness as a session beer.
I was lucky enough to work for Oddbins, and tried many different types. The most bizzare, was one called Aventinus which tasted like Smokey Bacon crisps. Top beer at 8.3% though

The best beer to drink is one that is not bland and has some flavor to it. In other words, not Budweiser, Miller, or Coors.
Samuel Adams is such a beer, as is Yuengling Traditional Lager, and other such craft, regional, and microbrews. As for imports, I really like Guinness and Murphy's the best.

It's purely subjective. The good part is, you're just going to have to do a lot of tasting to figure out your own favorite.
Personally, I like darker, more full bodied beers. Brother Theloneous from North Coast Brewery, a micro-brew in Fort Bragg, CA, is my personal favorite.

It is all a matter of personal preference. I like lagers and ales but some people don't care for darker beers.
If you want to experiment, are creative and have the time to do it, check out this website: http://www.mrbeer.com. You can order mixes and make your own. My experience is that these are not quite as sweet as something you would buy at the store, so some people don't care for them, but I think they are great. It's a lot of fun also.

It's personal taste that matters. However, if I want just a cold all-american beer...BUD...in a bottle.
If I want something deliciosly different - Framboise. It's a Belgian lambic made from raspberries. Truly, my favorite.
