I'm currently 22 years old with a marine technology diploma and going to work in a marine company for 3 years doing structural steel work to serve a bond. I thought of going for studies at age 25 (after finishing my bond) in a local university such as NUS and NTU ( from Singapore) to obtain a degree in mechanical engineering, as I have more interest in that field. But once i graduate from the university at age 28, will my age and experience affect in me finding of mechanical engineering jobs? I have only 3 years experience in structural steel works which is more of like civil engineering work and I'm only starting out as a mechanical engineer at age 28, with really no mechanical work experience. Pls advice.

Others do but with others it's really how you sell yourself in an interview that counts the most.

My view is qualifications first. I'm guessing that the reason why your question exist because employers do not want you to know that fact. They tell you experience is more important so that they can come in later about your salary issues.

I would encourage you to go for further studies. Since I found this question on a Singapore content, I assume you are a guy who needs to finish his NS? In that case, 28 yrs old is considered the appropriate age to start your career.

I just applied for a job and had an interview. I originally gave them my resume showing my 4+ years of experience in that field. They had me fill out a professional application and a background check form. They didn't even use the application to determine if I was hired only the results of my background check.

While employers look at the degree you have earned, they also put same importance on skills learned, "achievements in previous employment", also compatible personalities with the manager and applicant as well as a good match for the company...where the company is heading

it depends on the prospective employer. My current employer actually see both the experience and the qualififaction before they recruit me. Some employer actually see your age and the experience you have before they employed you.
