You will not need to show your passport, but you need to have it with you at all times.
In France as well as in Germany foreigners have to be able to identify themselves, with their passport or a residence permit.
(I do not know if a residence permit for Germany would be good for France.)

Normally it is not a problem, but if you happen to have an accident, need to report a theft or be arrested for whatever reason, you need to be able to proof your ID with a passport.
And if you can not, your case will be much harder. (Unless you report a passport as stolen.)

yes u need a passport to go to anywhere out of the country no matter if ur in the us army

No you wont need it to enter France but it would be a good ID.
Much of the European continent is on the Schengen system to make it easier for all to travel and governments to save money.
