At the LCMS Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis they are now using the ESV. Most of our congregations still use the NIV, though.
From what I have been told the ESV is a much better translation of the Greek and Hebrew put into modern language than the NIV was. The RSV, while it was a very good translation, was sometimes hard to understand, especially to the "young" Christian.

I don't think that there is as big a distinction between those translations as between the KJV and the others.
The Catholics have a version of the RSV that they tend use above the others. The NIV is mainly used in Protestant Churches,
Many Churches don't endorse a specific Bible translation and during Bible study will read from many different translations to get a more complete picture of the scriptures.

The RSV is a fairly inaccurate version (at least thats what I remember). Sorry I can't point out explicit examples as to why.
I'm amazed at the number of answers that have no clue about the KJV and it's poor translation as well. If I was a Christian, I would want to know and be sure of the translation that I was using and the pro's and con's of the others.

KJV is my choice. The wording has been changed so much in the new ones. For those that say it doesn't make a difference. It does. You can change a word here and there and you have a totally different meaning. Saying it's easier to understand is crap. The old one was just as easy to understand as the new ones. Anything goes in the new ones.

KJV only for me. NIV has took the word of God and destroyed it. They say its easier to read but it takes out whole verses and takes out many words.
