"Under the basic teachings of Islam, the Koran cannot be challenged or contradicted, being the perfect word of the creator of the Universe. To speak of the compatibility of science and Islam in 2007 is rather like speaking of the compatibility of science and Christianity in the year 1633, just as Galileo was being forced, under threat of death, to recant his understanding of the Earth's motion."

There is no reason for a journal as established as Nature to bend to religious dogma at all. They are probably the top peer reviewed scientific journal in Biology and they don't need to make excuses with the religious for what they do. Nor do they have any obligation to try to bring the religious into the science fold.

I agree with the criticism if they did what that article said.

first it occurs to me that nature's editors have the right to publish whatever they please and don't have to answer to sam harris. harris provides no reason why one must agree with his notion of the basic teachings of islam. in practice i suppose he's right, science and islam are not compatible, at least not in most islamic countries. but that doesn't prevent some people from making efforts in that direction, i think they should be encouraged rather than ridiculed. at least they've seen that there is a problem to be solved, which is more than most muslims have managed.

Sam Harris is right. If and when there is conflict between science and religion, that is a problem for religion, not something that science needs to address.

There is no way that science and Islam are ever going to be compatible.

Sadly, he is too right on.

But, I would ask all who read this to remember that the only believers who fear science are those whose faith is a weak reed.

Mine is a giant oak and I am a scientist who is also a theologian.
