No you can not. The cartridge is also called 7.62X51R in some countries. But the 30-30 Winchester and its metric labeling 7.62 X 51mm rimmed is the only ammo you will want to shoot. A very fine brush gun and good out to 150 yards. Shot placement is everything.

Its a good deal if it is in good condition and seems to function properly. They are good guns for deer hunting and would be best in the woods rather than shooting long distances but i have shot over 300 yards with mine accurately. If you are really wanting a 30/30 winchester you can spend a day looking at a few other gun shops and probably find another just as nice for less $. When i bought mine i went to three different shops and the one i bought was nicer then some more expensive ones i seen,i paid $200 with a nice scope and it looked brand new, but if the gun you are looking at is in good shape and has a good scope than it is a good buy! The winchester 30/30 lever action is a great gun and you will enjoy it.

Rule of thumb: Always use ammo chambered for your rifle. Whatever is stamped on the barrel or receiver of your rifle is the proper caliber for it. VERY few exceptions. If memory serves me, the .30-30 Winchester was once called: The .30 WCF (.30 Winchester Centerfire); that would be one exception, except that bullets so labled would probably be collectible. Also, on ammo that old you'd have to worry about misfires and weak loads that could cause the bullet to lodge in your rifle's barrel.

Best.

uh, no..

you can't shoot anything other then 30/30 cartridges in a 30/30 rifle. 1st it's the only cartridge that will fit in the chamber, 2nd if you attempt to do so, you may wind up the next recipient of the Darwin award and be praise for the removal of your genetic material from the gene pool.

Attempting to use a gun in a configuration for other then what it was designed for even with sleeves is degrading it's effectiveness. I beg to differ with James on this. 30/30 is pretty anal. I've had one. 30/30 is .308 diameter, and the 32 is not a 308. the diameter of the bullet is not compatible. You could potentially "sleeve down" but you can't make it shoot something bigger. a 32 is out of the question. Getting a $30 sleeve stuck in the chamber of a $500 gun truly tends to piss me off.

No. Only 30-30 shells can be shot from it. Remington, Winchester, Federal and others all make shells for the ol 30-30. Find out which one your gun shoots best and stick with it.

As it comes from the factory, no, you cannot use any other caliber in any firearm not designed for it. The only exception being #1. dual cylinder revolvers, as .22 long rifle and .22 magnum, or .45 long Colt, and .45 rimless semi-automatic cartridges. #2. Some sports (shooting supply) catalogs [you will have to search for them] offer a cartridge or caliber (usually to .22 caliber) conversion sleeve for the chamber and barrel of some .30 caliber rifles. These work for 30-30 and 30-06 rifles. Wikipedia has an article on "caliber conversion sleeves" that is informative. Good luck, and happy trails, as old Roy Rogers used to say. :-)

The question should be "why would you want to?" The .30/30 is one of the most widely used and available hunting rounds in the USA. If you can't find ammo for a .30/30 you aren't looking!

james j is right! with the adapters I have shot 32 acp in my 30-30 and also with a 308 adapter I have shot them in my 308 & in my 307 94 winchester. the .311 32 acp bullet is a low pressure round and makes your deer rifle into a rabbit gun although you have to poke the emptys out with a stick.
I also have one so I can shoot 22 rimfires in my 223 mini 14.

I wouldnt shove a .223 shell in there if I were you.

I would however look at the range of available grain weights that are on the open market. While not being as open as say an aught6, you will find you can get a fairly wide range of bullet and powder weights for this caliber.

Get some training before you decide to shoot this thing. Even if it is to only pay attention to about 20% of the people who post here. Don't be in a hurry and always use common sense where knowledge isn't available.

I have to disagree with the above folks....partially.
You CAN shoot other cartriges in it with the use of a cartridge adapter, also known as a supplemental chamber.
This is a steel device that looks like a fired cartridge. you insert the specified smaller cartridge into the base end, and then load it into the gun. After shooting it, you carefully eject it as not to lose it, push the fired cartridge out, and reload it for the next use.
With the proper size supplemental chamber, you could shoot .32 ACP or.32 H&R magnum in a 30-30. You CANNOT do so without one of these chambers though!.
I see these advertized in Shotgun News all the time.
They've been around for decades and are very safe.
I'll find you a site that sells them and edit it onto here in a few minutes.

Here it is,
