Hi, I'm a baker and at 25 have been told that I am very young for this job, apparently Bakers are a dying breed as most people would rather just buy factory made stuff in packets. Is this true? I'd like to one day oopen my own Bakery and Tea rooms, but if people are no longer interested is this a good idea? Or should I just get a job in IT like I've been advised to do?

Stick with it. True baking is an art form. There are highly paid bakery/pastry chefs. Follow your dream. Choose the right location, and your Tea Room will be delightful. If you enjoy what you do, you're already a success, as as young as you are, you have time to develop greatness.

Id much rather get my bread from a proper bakery, but I think people tend towards convenience these days.

My grandad was a baker, so I think there should be more small bakerys around to keep the tradition going. Nothing tastes better than freshly baked bread.

I think you should open your own bakery and tea shop - you just need to pick the right location, adn Im sure it would be popular!

Sounds like one of the interesting jobs left - providing a service in this way. Most people appreciate home baked goods and going to a baker is much better than mass produced goods which have no flavour and are not fresh.

If you want to carry on this job, do so - especially if you wish to start your own business, which would be very satisfying.

Bakers with experience have a grand future in places like the USA... you need to research the market and find places that require your skill. There are even restaurants that make their own breads and therefore need bread bakers. I wouldn't mind having your skill. It's a skill you can take with you without having to pack a briefcase or a tool bag.
You'd find a job for sure in France & Italy where there are still many bakeries and fewer and fewer young people who want to work that kind of job (and especially the hours).

It's not outdated at all! Every morning I go to the Safeway there's a local bakery delivery truck hauling in breads. The newspaper is full of help wanted ads for bakers and pastry cooks. And the pay is great! Makes me wish I'd learned baking and pastry.

I think it is important to do a job you enjoy. I also think that, if you were in the right area, a bakery/tea room would do great business. That is the problem with our country, always modernising. But it also delivers you a pretty cool niche to fill, there will always be people who enjoy old fashioned shops (the sweet shops that sell hundreds of classic sweets do roaring trade, in the right area). So yes, it might be a little old fashioned, but there is definitely a place for it :) Don't give up.

its fantastic that you are a young baker people do buy from supermarkets but the quality from a true baker is the best, stick at your trade and get your tea shop people love it you will work hard ,harder than you have ever worked before for someone else but there is nothing like having your own business good luck to you ignore all those people who say go into I.T. they know nothing.

I think with contaminated foods and recalls on everything appearing that people are starting to care more about where their food comes from not just convenience. Have you noticed the demand for organic foods is growing. I admire your chosen profession very much I love tea rooms ! I haven't seen a good bakery in a while but I would absolutely love it !If this is your passion go for it!

I'd rather buy from a bakery. I would rather keep small suppliers going than shop in Tesco, Sainsbury's etc. I love going to the butchers to see what they've got and like the 'personal' touch you get and the relationship/rapour you can get. I love going to the cheesemonger, farm shop and green grocers too - where at all possible. With everyone wanting organic and the backlash against large supermarkets controlling the market you may be lucky and earn a fortune. However, it depends on the area you want to set up your shop in - do you think it would be popular? Good luck.
