The title says it all really. Just looking at setting up 5.1 for DVD's etc and am exploring my options. I would be very interested to see what other people think on this subject, please no one-word answers, explanations are always appreciated ;)

The absolute best is a once decoded signal. Not one that is decoded and re-coded to pass along from device to device, like optical, hdmi, or even coax. Also these digital types of connection require that both the source and the amp support the format.

With those givens I say none of the above to your question. Balanced discrete outputs give the best uncompressed sound, given that it is the proper cable. Discrete RCA's are next.

In a pinch I will use coax for runs 1M or less and optical for runs over 1M. for reasons that are a little complex to describe here. But these are my own and a few others findings.

I haven't gotten a HDMI device to work with the higher bandwidth formats yet. So I can't fully evaluate the performance, but give it a few years and I think it will work out when HDMI 2.0 is released and manufactures have had time to work out the software bugs.

hey there

please don't dismiss this because i am a girl

coax cable will usually give you the best sound. fibre optics is good but lots of time there is too much "info " to travel through and can actually blow the input on your amp( speaking from experience) and they tend to be a little more expensive

hdmi are good to but remember you're sharing it with picture as well so your not getting a true audio stream

overall coax is the most solid and the most dependable, just make sure its a monster cable.

ps thx cables are overrated and just a money making scam

Hi.When it comes to selecting interconnects there is no guarantee that digital cables perform better than analogue cables.Digital does not always imply better sound quality. There are significant difference in the way digital and analogue signals are handled that are dependent upon the characteristics of the Source device.

Some of these answers are just laughable.

There should be no noticeable difference. The advantage optical has over coaxial is that there is no chance of ground loops through the cable.

I have noticed that you have listed Digital interfacing connectors, these are independent of the sound quality, there are various digital compression formats available, and most if not all accept these interfaces.

The only different between them are the data rate, which is insignificant, since the digital format provides us with 3D or surround sound. I my opinion all of them will sound great, and far better than your standard television set.

I find that HDMI works the best when it's coming from my home theater system for audio. However I find digital coaxil is better running from my comcast hd box for audio so I use

DVI to HDMI from cable box to tv then Digital Coax from HD box to home theater system. Gives imo the best sound.
