Just use the task manager. ctrl + alt + del
If you're not sure which tasks to shutdown then goto the Applications tab where only running Applications are listed.

If you want to shut them all down at once, select the top application, hold down the shift key and click on the bottom application. This will select them all, and you cant hen click end task. Otherwise, just select the apps you want to end one at a time.

Check out that program, you can choose to close all running non-essential programs or make "rules" so only select programs close each time.
