...funny, I remember going to see this film for the first time, and expecting some semblance of a sex comedy, and was pleasantly surprised to find one of the most delightful, funny, poignant and moving dramatic films, which I'd ever been privy of...

...since then, I'ts become one of my personal favorites!!!

Society sets forth certain standards...there are certain expectations...but these rigor standards should never hamper one's heart's true desire; in risking being the outcast...the misfit...there's most certain satisfaction in going out and marching to the beat of your own drum...

...the possibilies and choices become practically endless!!!

...as this has always been one of my basic philosophies in life, I was able to relate most readily to this film...

This story is about realizing that though education opens new doors, it has its limitations. It isn't a cure for all that ails us. In fact, it can sometimes just complicate life if you don't know how to apply that knowledge.

For the sake of her education, Rita loses her husband. She also gains some friends that live lives of emptiness. Finally, her professor, whom she admires, reveals his own faults through his alcoholism and his unpleasant attitude.

What Rita learns at the end, choosing to go back to her original name, Susan, but still finishing her education, is that being yourself has to be more important than what you put into your head. Learning to find what fulfills her and then pursuing it seems to be the ultimate lesson of this film, then.

The end of the movie has her saying that her professor gave her a choice. When life seems to hold no alternatives, this can be a great thing. Yet, in my experience, sometimes the only choice is how we respond to our circumstances, and in that case, "Educating Rita" seems to lack answers for a situation like that. So, while it's pleasant and inspiring, its lessons are limited, like education itself. (grin)
