White gold was developed as a cheap alternative to platinum in jewellery. Standards have now been developed where "White Gold" has been defined as having a Yellowness Index value of 32.0 or less. There are three grade of white gold, bassed solely on color . Grade 1 (Premium white grade) – good white color, no need for rhodium plating.
Grade 2 (Standard grade) – reasonable white color; rhodium plating is optional. Grade 3 (Off-white colour) – needs to be rhodium plated. http://www.gold.org/jewellery/technology/colours/white_guide.html

normal 18 or 22 carat gold elelctroplated with rhodium gives a whitish / silver appearance and is called white gold. infact platinum is also substituted by a coating of rhodium on silver and sold in the market as platinum.
the rhodium plating can also be 'removed'
