i always thought it was 'the more you know, the less you understand' or 'true wisdom is realising you know essentially nothing about anything and never will!'...guess the first is a lil catchier though.
people have been thinking about stuff for some time now(!)...so much so that it will take at least your whole lifetime to understand any single field of knowledge and most people simply do not have the intelligence or the inclination to understand things at their 'deepest' level. that's kinda obvious when you think about how many people know themselves even!
