Is Valtrex like an antibiotic for cold sores & herpes? Could it cause a yeast infection as a side effect?

I was prescribed it for a fever blister and I was wondering if it would cause a yeast infection.

Valtrex is an antiviral drug. It's mechanism of action is that it is an inhibitor of an enzyme that only the virus uses, so it cannot cause a yeast infections. Yeast infections that are caused by antibiotics because they kill the "good" bacteria that live in the vagina allowing for yeasts to move in and set up shop.

No, a yeast an infection can no longer reason herpes. Valtrex is more like an anti-viral (viruses cause cold sores and Herpes) but it's possible that it could still make one prone to a yeast infection. I would recommend checking with your pharmacist as well to see what they say.

Valtrex side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Valtrex: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
