When I was 12 I picked strawberries all freaking summer for my first paycheck. We could get paid any time we wanted, but we got paid by the flat of berries and it was best to let it add up all summer.
I bought a Nikon Lite Touch 35mm camera with my first check. Our small local paper ran a photography how-to article once a month, and the staff photographer said he was using it for the camera he kept in his pocket all the time. I figured if it was good enough for him, it was a good camera for me to buy.
Used it for years (7 actually) until a loser ex-boyfriend took it when he moved.
Boy I was proud of that camera lol I think it does a kid good to have a job, even if it's a miserable one like picking produce. I learned a lot about the value of money, and thanks for the question and helping me remember. :)

christmas presents. started my job early december.

my mom did not want us eating fast food. i took her and my brothers to an A&W. they put those trays hooked on your car window at this place. she made us take our order home. i still laugh about that.
she started letting us eat fast food a little more, but we still had to eat it at home with everyone sitting around the diningroom table.
