How can the US justify harbouring those who have or have attempted to overthrow democratic leaders in South America? Did Bush not say that harbouring terrorists was just as bad as being one?

Hi coragryph, the manes of overthrowing Chavez involved placing smipers close to anti Chavez protest and having these snipers shoot the anti Chavez protesters (10 died, over 100 wounded) and then they blamed it Chavez supporters. The leader of the coup then fled to Miami. The anti Chavez group manipulated Television footage of Chavez supporters defending themselves from anti Chavez police units to make it look like they were actually attacking the anti Chavez protesters. So I guess by your definition that makes them terrorists.

Look to the CIA - when Chavez was kidnapped he said that he felt those involved had CIA connections - Americans speaking like spooks apparently visited him in captivity.
The CIA, military intelligence, and Stay Behind groups - usually working together - are terrorists and will happily manufacture false flag terrorist atrocities in order to bring about the demise of a democratically elected government in any country in the world. Look at US involvement in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt - none of these are democracies yet all are supported with arms by the US.
George Orwell would have been delighted with the concept of a 'war on terrorism' - a title which one can easily apply to any state one disagrees with - provided a little false flag atrocity is perpetrated to portray them negatively in the press prior to supporting the CIA sponsored 'rebels' to overthrow any democratically elected leader.

Those were insurgents -- not terrorists.
Terrorism is a methodology and a tactic -- is a way of doing things, not (usually) a goal by itself.
Insurgents try to overthrow their govt. If they win, they're freedom fighters. Same thing, different history book.
Insurgents may ALSO be terrorists, if the means they use to overthrow their govt include attacking civilians, and sowing terror and chaos to achieve their political goals.
So, it matters how these people tried to overthrow Chavez -- what means they used or attempted to use.
