Well you're kind of between a rock and a hard place. If this issue goes to court the court CAN ORDER you to pay legal expenses.
I was once sued. I kind of won even tho I did lose. They firm suing me wanted a small amount like $8,000.00 PLUS legal fees. They ended up with $1,200.00 and the Judge ordered NO LEGAL expenses. Legal expenses could have been on up to $10,000 - $20,000 easily. Keep this in mind when NOT agreeing to the amount they are seeking. But I would sit down with them and talk before it gets this far if I were you. I did NOT talk with the company in the least other than tell them to stuff it up there asz as I did after the case was over in court. They might be willing to accept what you can afford on a monthly basis.

Assuming proceedings have actually begun, you can ask that their costs be taxed by a judge, which just means they are assessed as to what is reasonable.
If proceedings have not actually begun (i.e they have not issued a claim) , invite them to politely get stuffed.
Whether it is worth your while engaging a lawyer or not depends on the sums involved.
However, take it from me, there ain't no free legal advice on the internet that's worth having.
Free legal advice is like a free newspaper - interesting sometimes, but you wouldn't want to rely on what it says.

I've read your question a few times over and it seems to me to be of a matter of serious concern. There is no doubt that you need legal advice, but of course that costs a lot. Look in google; there are legal counsel out there willing to give first consult for free. I don't know where you live otherwise I could recommend someone. Best of luck.

i don't know why you would agree to anything without legal advice. infringement is a civil action, they don't have to offer any proof that they actually own a valid copyright to start this action. if they are spoofing, all the money you pay for their legal fees you can consider gone, that would not be recoverable, even for fraud. wise up fast or you could be taken to the cleaners instead of the court.

Dunno if you are in the UK or not, but we have an organisation call the 'Citizens Advice Bureau', a good place to get free advice on this kind of legal matter. Also if you genuinely cannot afford it they can assit with getting legal aid etc where appropriate.
