I know they are beneficial to the environment, and that most of them are not harmful (especially where I live. There are no black widows and I have never seen a brown recluse), but I am still terrified of the thought of having any of them in my house. So scared, that I cannot make myself finish unpacking from moving because I'm afraid they will be in the boxes (some boxes have been sitting in a room for 8 months now). How can I stop being so scared!? I just want to not feel like a prisoner in my own home!

I was never "terrified" of spiders but I used to be quite...cautious of them. What made me more "comfortable" with them was to observe them. I mean I deliberately went outside and looked for webs then I'd sit or stand and watch different spiders. One thing I saw for sure is, they are more afraid of us than we are of them. Even Black Widows (and we have a LOT of Black Widows here in Southern California). They'll run and hide quicker than most spiders. I've learned to peacefully co-exist with spiders (except Black Widows. I keep a can of Raid handy for them.). We do have Brown Recluses here but they are rare; I've never seen one, and don't want to. Most spiders no longer bother me but I still get startled by them occasionally, especially the really big ones. If they're in the house I usually try to catch them in a jar then take them outside and turn them loose (except Black Widows, they're too dangerous). If you can, just turn your boxes upside down, pour out the contents, and step back. Any creepy-crawlies should try to run away. If you can't turn the box upside down, get somebody who is not so bothered by spiders to open the box and you stand close by. Leaving a box undisturbed for months at a time is a good way to set up a spider motel unless the box is completely sealed.

Learn to identify the good and bad ones. You probably will never see a Recluse because they like crawl spaces, attics, places people don't usually go and they seldom are larger than nickel to quarter size including legs.

There is no need to be afraid of spiders. They are just a small living creature. You are much more bigger than the spider.

What I would suggest is that you buy a mortein roach bomb which are cockroach baits that kill cockroaches. you can use them on spiders too. After the spiders have eaten what is inside they would eventuall die out.

Or the second suggestion is that you buy an insect spray and kill them with it. After you have killed one you will eventually enjoy killing them. Then you will not be scared anymore.

Try to watch them and to get closer and closer to them. Get used to see them. How they behave, how they move, etc.

Rationalize what is a spider. But do not touch them if they can be dangerous or harmful, of course.

In other words, tame your fear.

you could ask someone to help you get rid of the spiders or perhaps you may look at a different point of view-actually, spiders are harmless if they are not poisonous and they too don't like to climb on your body trust me on that
