After the head is removed the body is briefly controlled by the leftover electrical impulses still in the spinal cord. With no direction from the brain, those impulses are not controlled, which explains why sometimes a chicken will run or flap its wings, and sometimes it will simply flop around. As for the chicken who lived without a head for six weeks, that has to be fiction. The brain stem controls essential involuntary funtions such as heartbeat and breathing. With the brain stem removed these functions will stop, resulting in the death of the chicken, and rather quickly.

Any animal's body may move around a bit after a violent death, just from random nerve impulses causing muscles to contract. A chicken does not "live" with its head chopped off, but it may move around a bit. Six weeks? Nope! Not even six minutes! In the same way a snake with its head chopped off will writhe around for a short while.

That is not generally true but a farmer did chop of part of a chickens head and it survived for a very long time, probably the six weeks you are thinking of. If the whole head was chopped off it would die very quickly.

When they run after having their heads chopped off, their bodies are still pumping adrenalin, which causes it to run. I don't think it is possible for a chicken to live for six weeks after having it's head chopped off. But who am I to say its not possible? If anything, the chicken would have bled to death after the first couple of hours

I'm pretty sure that is just a story.
They do flop around a bit though. Just because the head is gone, doesn't mean the body just stops working. There is still blood moving to the organs and there is still information being passed down the spine. For a very short while.

What you heard was nonsense. They move for about 1 minute after their heads are cut off. This is a reaction of their muscles and nerves and has nothing to do with their being alive. After the tremors, the chicken no longer moves and it is most certainly dead.

No, that story is true. The chicken's head was not completely severed; the brain stem was still intact. Inhumane? Yes. But it did happen.

They can't. They're dead without any brain activity which is located in the head....so without the head they can't live.
