My point is that if a child is left home alone in this country(uk). The parents would face criminal charges for abandonment. We all know from the media what happened in portugal to young Madaline.
To those who dont know she was left in her apartment with her 2 younger siblings whilst her parents when out for a meal, although they were only about 50ft away at a local bar she was taken from their apartment.

I know some of u will think this question is heartless for the way the parents must be feeling but this is for the sake of other children who's parent do the same as the Mcann's

To leave a 5 year old alone...they should at least have the other children removed from their custody...they didn't even lock the door..(not that it matters)...here in the US, they would be charged as well...losing her is not enough of a punishment...they obviously did not care enough about her to use common sense.

I dont think they should be charged with anything. 50ft is a very small distance and probably most people at home leave their child a much greater distance every night when they sleep.
To charge parents for leaving their children alone asleep would just add to this 'nanny state' that we are already in.
Whilst I feel for the the parents. I think they should stop hogging the limelight. They are not the only parents whos child is missing. I'm not saying they should give up their search, but I cant help but think they are doing this for the money.. I guarantee there will be a book and perhaps a movie at the end of this...

No, they should be charged with criminal negligence!

As a rule, when I investigated child abuse and neglect as far as leaving children alone, I used In re Zeiser, 133 Ohio App,3d 338 (Ct. App. 1000)

Although the court acknowledged the difficulty juvenile courts face in deciding what is and is not neglect, it stated it was willing to establish a "bright line" in this case: a six and an eight-year-old, regardless of intelligence, maturity, or social adjustment, are too young to be left alone without adult supervision on a regular basis, much less an entire day"

The court found that no matter how good, mature and intelligent the six or eight-year-old child, it is unreasonable to expect such behavior "all the time." "To assert that such children will never put themselves in harms way by doing something stupid or by panicking during a crisis is the height of self-deception on the part of a parent." It is then the parents job to be thereto provide adequate supervision during times "when those aberrations in the behavior of a good child occur"

What these parents did was criminal, not neglectful! They should be charged. The 2 younger siblings were babies! There is absolutely NO excuse for what they did!

Hi. I think you have a very valid point. Had they been a couple from council estate the media would have had a very different view on events. They have used the media and i am sure they have someone like Max Clifford (But not Max Clifford) working behind the scenes on their behalf. However they are suffering greatly at this time,as are all the members of the little girls family.
I agree the media should be doing more to point out the dreadful consequences of leaving children alone in any location.

I for one do not think this question is heartless.
I for one have been pondering! why in he hell did Mrs Mcann run into the party and scream Madalines been taken.
Wouldn't any body normal , scream to everyone 'Madelines gone missing or she's just not there? WHY TAKEN?

I don't think anything would be gained by prosecuting them. I reckon that countless parents abroad are now watching their kids more carefully, which is good. The Mcanns will pay for their mistake forever. I wonder, when they're older, how harshly Madeline's siblings will judge them?

OMG, how many times does this question have to be asked.

yes they should it is obvious, there is a law there but for some reason they seem to be above it.

It annoys me they are getting so much attention and so much cash for something they are to blame for. And whats worse, people like you asking these questions are only giving them more publicity.

Personally I think it is getting time consider anything about this, hundreds if not thousands of kids go missing, and not because of parental neglect. why do they get no worldwide support???????

By all means send thoughts out to madeline, and keep an eye out for her. but enough of the parents, they are in the wrong and i find it very difficult to be compassionate to them for neglecting their children.

And if they were working class they would be. The fact they are affluent medical professionals has protected them.
Can you imagine a single mother abandoning her child while she was out on the bevvy with friends in Benidorm being afforded the same "good will"?

If they are not discovered to have contributed to their daughters murder, they should be punished anyway for leaving them alone like that
