I have heard this my whole life; that shrimp are the underwater cousins of cockroaches. Is this true? Also I have heard that lobster and crab are just really large insects. I have an aversion to seafood (excluding fish) because of this rumor, or fact or whatever it is.
Is this fact or fiction? Any scientific proof or a link providing info on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

So far I've gotten a couple of sympathetic and decent answers. However I have no idea where some of you people are getting the chicken and tuna references. And Packinrat, thanks a ton for the history lesson of the tuna company but it had absolutely no relevance to the question I asked. My apologies if I have come across as one who's IQ is smaller than her shoe size, but please stop mistaking me for Jessica Simpson, people.
For god's sake, give me a break here!

My Marine Biology professor used to say that lobsters were the cockroaches of the sea, actually... As for them being insects, that's untrue. There are no true insects in the ocean.
I don't like seafood either, and I'm perfectly ok with it. I think it smells awful and tastes too strong, that's all. No need to try and work up an appetite for something that you have an aversion to, sweetie. I tell everyone who thinks it's odd that I don't eat seafood, "You should be happy! It means there's more for you!" :)

Shrimp is definitely the cockroach of the sea and I dont have to be an scientist for that. Just compare a shrimp and a cockroach and you will see. Both have an exoskeleton and are soft in the inside. Both the shrimp and the roach serve as sort of a trash collection service in life because they both feed on waste, and leftovers. Both the roach and the shrimp search the floor for these small leftovers and eat them. Therefore.....yes, the shrimp is the roach of the sea.

I know Packinrat's answer is from 7 years ago.
however i do want to point out that while the bible does not specifically state shrimp.... it does say this.
(i would also like to point out that im an Atheist and i happen to know the bible better than most people who claim to be a christian :) )
Leviticus 11:9-12 says:
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.

Cockroaches and Shrimp are Arthropods, the same Phylum that all bugs, insects, spiders, Crabs, lobsters, and decapods fall into, so yeah they are related i that way. Shrimp are decapods (10 legs).

Shrimp are not insects. They are totally different and by any reasonable standard would not be considered as being closely related. The same thing applies to lobsters. Only someone who had an aversion or religious mandate to not eat them would knock them in that way. Crustaceans are not closely related to insects. They are separated by many hundreds of millions of years.

Unless you are vegan, trust me...you don't even want to know about the origins of many food sources. Do a little research, and make the choice that is right for you.
P.S.---I respect anyone that stands by their convictions. No bashing here ! P.S.S---Fanantics, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter what side of the fence you choose to stand.
