By the wording of your question, it sounds like you might think this obsession with outer beauty only occurs in the gay community. Think again. It's a cultural problem in the U.S.

It does matter what's on the inside.. I have fallen for guys before.. I have even felt some degree of love for them.. but in the end, there is no physical attraction on my part.. they might as well have been my brother.. (ew.. I don't want that picture in my head.. )
When I fall for a girl, it isn't a case of sisterly/friendly love.. it is the complete package.. and I am true to my Virgo nature.. when I finally do fall for someone (doesn't happen often) I go all out.. It doesn't feel the same AT ALL..

Honey... I am SO not into the self-absorbed types who are all about appearance.
That's why I'm with my honey...although not at all disappointing to look at, it was her compassionate and selfless personality that attracted me. Her love of the arts, her love of history and somewhat similar taste in music. That's what attracted me!
Oh, ok...and those beautiful blue eyes!

of course it matters,unfortunately most people especially the younger ones in their 20's of whatever orientation don't see the importance until
its to late.
