Yes, have mentoring ability but I consider it a gift.
Raised 2 children with learning disabilities, one in Reading/Language, and the other in Mathematics.
A lot of patience is required to mentor a frustrated child with low self esteem.
Spent the last 4 years doing the same with a Grandson, whom we just returned back to his Mom.
He is so happy to be back with her and she can handle the responsibility now.
Anyone can be a positive role model and mentor.
Children especially, these days need positive examples to look up to.

I am constantly being begged to teach someones kid my style of Kenpo. I really detest doing it because Marshal Arts have become so sensationalized that everyone knows a little and think they are supermen! The kids I teach make it to maybe a brown belt at best, because I teach the old belt system, no modifications so your child can be a black belt at 13 years old. No stripes, no tags, no badges. Belts mean nothing, training and technique mean everything. The reason I am sought after is not because I am the best, it's because I teach "old school" Parents love my technique since it works, kids hate it because their buddies are all black belts and my student is a green belt. That is until competition begins then they clean up, and understand what I am saying. Then the learning curve takes off! I'm not the first choice, but, those that get in my classes, stand tall, because they do possess pride. After every competition my phone rings off the hook, but, no one wants to lower themselves to a lesser belt, so I am left with the cream of the crop! I am down to 3 kids now. 2 green and one brown belt that is about to make black (my first student to reach that level). If he follows each technique to it's true form in competition (even if he looses, lol that will never happen) then I think he will make it. If my mentoring style sucks, then so did my masters, and his masters, and his etc... However, the new style of Karate is pulling strongly at each of my green belts, and I am guessing that they may last 3 more months and move on to get their belt somewhere else. Once that happens I am retiring from teaching. It's lost it's joy. No flavor.
