i said how are you coping? his reply was well i could be better. WHAT DID HE MEAN BY THAT?

It means, Im good but not as well as I could be. Maybe he is depressed or has a pain somewhere or something else is wrong. Thats what it means though

I would take him at his word. Otherwise, he would have said he was fine. He is saying, he has been better than he is now. Since he said that to you, you could in turn ask him, what is the matter? Is there anythng you could do to help?

I guess he means he's felt better on other days. That today isn't the best of days.
