One cannot say for sure that is what is down the road for this country, but the apparatus is already in place for such an event so it shouldn't be that difficult for the government to pull it off if it wants.

I guess i should warn you that predicting the future should be left to professionals. You know, wizards, astrologists and politicians. I am none of the above... yet.
What I am is a student of history and I have some faith on that much discredited theory that looking at the past can help us prepare for the future. In the area of Martial Law, i suggest you look into Siren's link. It is an excellent article on government preparations for controlling an unruly population.
Most interesting are the occasions that have motivated such preparations. Operation Garden Plot itself was started in'67. It was updated every decade and again in 1992, during the Rodney King riots. What that means is that the government is ready to legislate against the best interest of the population because it is ready to combat an angry populus. READ: the government is not afraid to allow poverty to run rampant, not afraid to sacrifice your sons in costly wars, not afraid to destroy your cherished freedoms.
Does that mean martial law is coming? I don;t think so. The government will not do away with the appearance of legality unless it is forced to do so. On the other hand, limited use of martial law in a regional conflicts is likely if either poverty or war continue to affect US living standards.

On that note, I see Iran as today's Cambodia (except it would be impossible for the bombing to occur in secret). What I mean is that if the US gov. attacks Iran, there will be a popular reaction of equal or greater magnitude to the protests in reaction to the illegal invasion of Cambodia. Remember what happened then: Kent State and Jackson State and the COINTELPRO campaign against the Peace groups.

Looking at the past and keeping in mind that Bush is not all that different from Nixon or Reagan or even Clinton, I would say that the veneer of legality is very important to the elite. So that we are more likely to see Kent State repeated even Waco, than we are to see an official State of Emergency.

Then again, predicting is not my field.

Peace.

Song: For What It's Worth

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

That is a distinct possibility I believe. People are becoming more and more displeased with things that are going on such as the war in Iraq, gas prices, job losses, etc. When a great number of people reach this point it could lead to civil unrest. I have heard that the present administration is just looking for a reason to institute martial law.

A government destroys its own legitimacy by declaring martial law in the absence of an emergency. I suppose an elected government could try it, but a motivated populace would be justified in rebelling against the government for it.

This is the real reason behind the 2nd Amendment. To ensure that the people have the ability to defend themselves if the government goes nuts.

It is being brought to us one city, county, state, and federal law at a time. That way we don't see it coming. Before you know it we will be in full cooperation of what our grandparents would have called Martial law and we will just call it life.

Get real. There are more guns in America than people.

Facts from Voice of America television (VOA.gov) on guns:

8 seconds - every 8 seconds a new gun is made in America

1 hour - every hour 4 people are shot in America

1 day - every day 80 people die from bullets in America

Martial Law will never happen in the US. The US is an Army.

Current odds are about 35% chance over the next year.

It won't be legal -- but that hasn't stopped Bush yet.

de facto martial law...patriot act, domestic spying,non-disclosed special powers to the president of the senate...you mean that sort of thing?

I don't think its likely the American people would be outraged.

absolutely big city crime out of control. illegals running rampant, social decay, degradation and loss of guns. the government set up is working well for them to step in and take all of our freedoms with the pretense they are protecting us. what they are protecting is them from us.
