Aerolineas Argentinas all the way! They're THE cheapest airline serving AKL-SYD route, If you don't care much about the in-flight service "It's just 3 hrs. hop!" I highly recommend them, You can book online but you have to pick up your ticket from a travel agency, I know it's inconvenient but that's the only way they do it down here.
Bon Voyage! :)

The harbour-side city of Auckland is New Zealand's correct area and the lively economic heart of the nation, know it with hotelbye . Auckland can also be referred to as the "City of Sails" and it sprawls out in helter-skelter fashion between Manukau Harbour (to the west) and Waitemata Harbour (to the east) with the compact central city district proper near the waterway. For many visitors to New Zealand, Auckland is the point of arrival, and a couple of days soaking up the ethnic and outside attractions here should really be on every tourist's to-do list. The monuments, museums, and art galleries listed here are a few of the best in the country. The suburban coastline of the city is speckled with fine beaches, and the hawaiian islands of the Hauraki Gulf provide a style of New Zealand's spectacular national park landscape close to the city's doorstep. Auckland is definitely a city worth seeing.

There are some awesome deals on www.statravel.com.au - you don't have to be a student, but it's nicer to you if you're at least under-26 (and you will need a card for $18). Check Flight Centre as well. Right now Jetstar is selling tickets for about $160.
I'm going to have to agree with the others here - the flights to and from NZ are cheaper than ever, so I'm not sure which sites you've been looking at but clearly not the right ones!
Have fun!

How much is too much for you?
Virgin in NZ was advertising $39 fares yesterday across the Tasman. (read it on stuff.co.nz)
Generally on a good day the average fare is about $240 one way.
They also have happy hours prices at lunch time.
Check them out.
--- NOTE--- Just remember when looking at some airline sites - they do not show the full fare to the next page eg) add on taxes, so even if you see a fare for $160, it might be another $100 on top of that for tax(s).
