Jamestown was first set up by The Virgina Company to find gold. The owners of the company were convienced that if the Spanish were finding gold inthe south they would find gold here. About 90% of the first ppl to jamestoen died from disease, indian attacks and starvation. They managed to arrive in the midst of one of the worst draughts North America had seen in 1000's of years. And they came with little food, they thought they would trade withthe "natives" for food. Unfortunately for them, no one told the natives.

1. Commercial- all of the New World colonies were set up to make money. Chartering ships and sending supplies were bloody expensive and so had to have investors who had to be repaid with profit.

2. Communal- life was hard and resources scarce and there was not enough to subsist, let alone any surplus, so labor and division had to be communal.

3. An unqualified Failure (for it's first few years at least) due to the fact they settled in a swamp (really really bad idea- there's a reason that the Indians who'd lived there for centuries didn't settle or particularly want the land Jamestown was located on) and they landed there during (though they had no way of knowing it) the worst drought in centuries, and very few of the colonists had farming experience.

4. An imitation- it was hoped that the Virginia experiment would be immediately lucrative like the Spanish colonies from Peru to Mexico with their vast takes of stolen gold and silver, but it was quickly learned that any wealth would be agricultural (and until tobacco from the Caribbean was introduced that wasn't going to happen).

"Type" of Colony is vague, but, Jamestown was owned by (granted to) a private company called the Company of Virginia, with the purpose of creating a permanent colony in the Americas...previous English attempts had failed...The Spanish had already created a foothold and was producing great wealth from America's resources, including Gold and Silver...
