I always thought envy was wanting what someone has, and jealousy is not only wanting what they have- but not wanting them to have it as well.
Example: envy= "I like her sweater, I want one just like it."
jealousy= "I like her sweater, I want HER sweater and don't want her to have one too. She looks trashy in it anyway. "

Same concept but jealousy is a bit harsher.

When you're jealous, you loathe someone while wanting what they have. When you're envy, maybe you dislike them but it's not as strong as the hatred that comes with jealousy.

Edit: Just found this on dictionary.com
"Envy and jealousy are very close in meaning. Envy denotes a longing to possess something awarded to or achieved by another: to feel envy when a friend inherits a fortune. Jealousy, on the other hand, denotes a feeling of resentment that another has gained something that one more rightfully deserves: to feel jealousy when a coworker receives a promotion. Jealousy also refers to anguish caused by fear of unfaithfulness."

envy is worse than jealousy because with envy, you want what the other person has when you jealous it means that you want something like what the other person has and you dont have the means to get it at that present moment.

Envy is wanting what someone has, like money or things. Jealousy is just generally wanting to be like someone.

Envy (I want what he or she has myself)
Jealousy (He or she is mine and no one else -(including he or she) had better mess with that.)
