William Shepphard first patented liquid soap on August 22, 1865. In 1980, the Minnetonka Corporation introduced the first modern liquid soap called SOFT SOAP brand liquid soap. Minnetonka cornered the liquid soap market by buying up the entire supply of the plastic pumps needed for the liquid soap dispensers. In 1987, the Colgate Company acquired the liquid soap business from Minnetonka.

And the reason, why. It is quicker to make than soap bars and contains less lye, so it is easier on the skin.

It is a question from the movie "The Sure Thing"

They invented liquid soap because soap bars slip when you use them and also some people doesn't like when other uses the soap bar. Also when people use it with wet hands the water goes to the soap then to the soap dish. So someone like the janitor needs to throw away the water from the soap dish to the sink after everyone uses it.

The great Soap-on-a-Rope phenomenon never really took off as planned, and Liquid Soap was the next evolutionary step.

Its for the lazy bather. You don't have to sud up the soap in your hand and you don't have to bend over in showers in the gym or prison.

because bar soap harbors bacteria and seems to be more messy... leaves chunky goo in your shower and on your sink

Because it's easier and no one else touches the bar before you (hygiene purposes).
