While driving, check engine light comes on and speed is reduced to approximately 25mph. Turned off vehicle, waited few seconds, turned back on again...power back for a short time, then power shut down again. What is wrong and how to fix it? Thanks for any advice...would like to fix ourselves but if not, then would like to have some knowledge before going to dealership for repairs.

The new technology that have sensors that sense malfunctions and send signals to your ECM to shut down or limit your driveablity to prevent damaging your engine. More than likely that it is the component that are vital to prevent engine damage such as low coolant. Try to get the code read out and pinpoint the problem. Eliminate one by one until you find the problem.

Drive it over to AutoZone or some other place that'll check your car's computer codes. Or spend seventy bucks and buy an OBDII scanning tool--the minimum variety is just fine--and check the codes yourself, now and in the future. You really need one of these nowadays.

See if you can also find a factory service manual while you're about it, or at least buy a Chilton's or Haynes for that car. It sounds like a fuel-delivery problem, but that could be caused by almost anything. The computer will tell you.

It was the control module in my van - shut down completely, wouldn't start - until towed to repair shop, then started fine. Finally solved by shop that (with my permission) drove until it quit and it stayed quit.
