Stick with XP. You know that will work and although Vista has some nice new stuff, it really isn't that big of an improvement. Though you have to figure that games you'll play in the future will be Vista friendly.

Vistas memory management is far superior to XP's.
For example. If you have 2GB of ram, Vista will utilize it to it's fullest extent (XP uses what it needs and then puts it back when done)... Vista may look like it's a memory hog and using too much memory - however it prioritizes where it needs the ram (ie if your playing a game it puts the memory into that .. but if your in the OS just tooling around, it uses more of the ram to make things run smooter).
You can also get a fast USB Flash Drive and use the "ready boost" technology which uses the flash drive for a swap file instead of the hard drive (obviously Flash Ram is a lot faster than a HD).
For gaming, it's not bad. The biggest thing with Vista is the drivers. For the most part, every company now has drivers for their products and if your buying new equipment you shouldn't have any issues finding them. Your biggest concern will be the video card. (Read up on the nVidia 8800 and Vista -- pretty sure they have ironed out the bugs with that but not sure... as for any other video card - no issues).
Also keep in mind for growth -- Vista has DX10, XP doesn't (and probably will never have it). Granted right now there are maybe only 2 games that use DX10 - but it's the growth, it will be there when more games start to use it.
Just make sure your using a newer video card which can support DX10.
So really the choice can still be a flip of the coin, but honestly I have not had any major issues running Vista and playing games.
If I was building new, I'd prolly go w/ Vista just because it's the push the MS is making and it's sure to only get better as time goes on.

In the mean time you can still use Xp.vista did not necessarily mean some one needs an upgrade, and some soft wares have been found to be incompatible to Xp, some people 's files could not open after they upgraded to Vista from Xp so be careful if you decide to do Vista,Micro soft usually announces if its a must for one to upgrade eg if hackers figure Xp totally (you know what i mean) then you will go a head.

If you're building a new machine use 64bit Vista Ulimate. Make sure your hardware and software are compatible with it. 64bit is more stable and 10% faster than the 32bit.
I've put Vista on SATA 3.0 hard drives, Raid0 arrays, even did an over-the-top install over XP pro using XP raid drivers and have had no probs. I put Vista on my 3.0 machine to see how it worked then ended up putting it onto my gaming rig. If you do your homework and fill it with 4 gigs of ram you wont have probs. One of the easiest installs if you know what you're doing and have your puter set up right! Everybody whined when XP first came out too. Vista is a great OS but its still a baby and people who can't deal with that shouldn't be trying to put it into their massive $500 Dells with 512MB of ram!!
If you're a gamer you'll be out of luck when the hot games that will only run on DirectX10 come out because XP doesn't and never will run DX10 even with a DX10 video card.

Personally I would use XP. Vista is all show and takes a lot of resources and you need those for your games and XP been out for years everything compatible with it
even if your using a 64 bit processor most games are made to use the most standardized equipment and 64 bit isn't the standard yet

get xp, vista is the worst thing you can possibly curse a fast computer with. if you are good with computers, then just get xp and fight the urge to show off the cool lighting effects that vista offers. and there are still a lot of bugs in vista, and it uses up a lot of your cpu. if you want a serious gaming rig, dont go for vista, go for xp or even a customized/stripped-down linux
