There are several things one needs to do to have the exhilarating life of an astronaut.

First and foremost, you need to be a scientist (or someone with a high degree in hard science).

Not joking here.

Most if not all people that have gone to the stars above are scientists. Why? Well it has to do with weightless experiments and other spacey question answering.

Next? Get yourself into NASA's good graces or at least WOW them.

Then? Get yourself into shape, astronauts aren't known to be flabby. They need to be in high physical condition in order to withstand the side effects of the jaunt outside.

Willingness and willpower will make you an astronaut/cosmonaut. Basic required qualification in spacescience will be an added qualification. Over and above commonsense and presence of mind.

Get an advanced college degree and apply. If you want to fly the shuttle, get your pilot's license while doing the rest.
