I have a cheap but effective charcol grill that I use for cooking. Could I use it as a mini firepit if I just clean the charcol out and use a little wood in it? I can't afford to buy a firepit right now and I thought this would do in a pinch. Whaddya think? Would it work and be safe? Has anyone tried this? Thanks in advance for your answers! :)

Guess I didn't make myself clear. This wouldn't be buried in the ground. It would be used on my patio table, which has a stone cover. In between uses it would be covered with the cover that came with my grill and, well, I guess I could cover it with a large plastic bag for extra protection.

My grill looks something like this, but it's not propane:

Of course you can. The grill was made for that kind of temps. and as long as you keep it cleaned out and covered you can cook on it one night and have a fire in it the next.

CAN YOU? Certainly. Will you be satisfied?

Do you intend to bury it? Cut the legs short? Cover it when not in use? Is it cast aluminum, or is it steel. Certainly as far as temps. are concerned there won't be much difference. Does the grill currently have grating that the coals sit on,,,off the actual grille body? Is there adequate ventilation for maintaining a regular fire? Depending on where you decide to place it, you might consider putting it on a base of pavers, or a piece of concrete backer board.

I wouldn't, first you lose the use of the grill and lets face the obvious every time it rains it will fill with water, because the holes in the bottom will fill with debris. It will be temporary and will corrode rapidly in the ground. As far as safe sure. Your better off digging a hole an lining it with rocks.

Of course you can. All the charcoal is is a fire. Flames from the wood should not get any higher than they do when you light the lighter fluid on the charcoal. The charcoal burns hotter that the wood would :) .
