It just sits there with a blank screen. It is a HP that is only about 2 years old.
I want to thank everyone for any help that you may offer. I have had problems with my laptop and everyone was very helpful.

It could be a number of things. But here is what I would do:
1. Unplug the system. Look on the back for a rocker on/off switch near where the plug goes in. Turn it off. Count to 5. Turn it on. Plug the plug back. Turn it on.
2. Replace the power supply.
Frankly, if number one does not work, number two is your most likely remedy.

There could be several things wrong with it.
1. The screen is dead or the video card is dead. Listen for the disk drive to function and go through whatever startup it usually does. Make sure the screen is plugged in. If you have a spare screen, swap it to try it out.
2. If it does not do its power on start test, then something is loose. turn the computer off. Open the computer up, and while you are touching the case with one hand (to dissapate static), check all the connnections with the boards, especially any cables. They should be tight. If they aren't plug them in properly. Leave the computer open and restart.
3. If it still does not restart, then look at the CPU fan. Is it running? It might not need it right off, so they could still be off.
4. Turn the computer off, then remove the cpu fan. Remember to touch the case all the time as you do this. Next, remove the cpu, there is probably a little lever that lifts it up. Put it right back in, and press it in a bit. Not too hard. Ok, it should go back into place. Replace the lever, replace the cpu fan. Recheck the cables and boards. Check the cables on the disk drives too. Restart the computer.
If it still doesn't work, then you have some problems. If you have a multimeter, you mgiht check the voltages coming out of the power supply. You may at this time be better off taking the computer to a repair shop. There is something wrong, but the possibilities are getting more precise and numerous.

Start with the silly basics: make sure the cord is still all the way in the wall and all the way into the back of the machine.
Double check that there is power at the outlet.
If you are using a power strip or UPS, make sure the power is one there (did the dog step on the switch if it is on the floor)
Listen for the sound of the power supply fan. If that is absent, look to see if you have a circuit breaker on the computer.
Now decide if you are up to testing the power supply yourself by swapping it out or if you want to take it to a repair shop.
If the computer sounds like it is running and you don't hear the sounds of the harddrive moving, may be more serious.
If running and harddrive are OK, then look at monitor connections and power and maybe swap with another monitor.
Most of the first two answers given don't apply.

Definitely what Mike said. If the computer is not coming on at all, obviously you can't do a system restore or anything else for that matter having to do with the system.
Follow Mike's advice and if nothing there works then contact HP for further assistance.
