The south switched in 1968 when Nixon came to the south to campaign. Before Nixon it was assumed the south was going to vote dem, but of course the dems neglected it and lost it then. After which they had the electoral votes so they didn't care about the south for a long time and even today do not care. You will not see a concerted dem effort to get southern voters, kind of like the reps dodging the NAACP. Look at the libs here calling the south stupid and redneck, the dems are right now vilifying the south so don't count on any blue markers coming up anytime soon.

JFK vs the Dixicrats of the 1960s. The Democrats were the party of racist KKK members. JFK rode the civil rights movement which split the Democratic Party.
The North was never solid Republican. In fact, Abraham Lincoln lost the election to F. Douglas in 1858 in his run for Senate. He barely won the presidency in 1860 and he had to pick up Andrew Johnson (a Democrat) as running mate in 1864.

1930's Socialism was forming and the Democrats embraced the idea of large government providing for the people.
Republicans beleived in personal responsability and smaller government (Captitalism)
Had alot to do with the great depression and was the start of social programs like welfare.
Though there are some economist now that beleive the "New Deal" had more to do with the great depression than the stock market collapse of 29.
Add: Wow I am agreeing with someone who thinks he is intelligent by nameing himself after Osama and Bush. The Democrats of the 30's were Progressives FDR was a leader in the change. Seems like everyone else needs to read up on alittle more history. The switch happened before the civil rights movement was in full swing.
Hillary currently associates herself with the Progressives of the 30's

If by "the old days" you mean the 1800s -- what changed was party affiliation relative to political philosophy.
Democrats in the 1800s were conservatives. Republicans were liberals and progressives. This swapped slowly over the early 1900s.

It had nothing to do with the depression, the new deal, world war two or the communist scare. It all happened in the 60s. When Presidents Johnson and Kennedy used the power of the federal government to support the civil rights movement and end segregation in this country, the ignorant southern white trash bigots bolted for the republican party. Ever siince then the Democrtatic party has stood up for working class people and doing the right thing wheras the republicans only stood for huge profits for the ultra rich and for hatred and bitterness.
