For most people, taking a pill means they are sick, so stopping taking a pill means you are better. Unfortunately that's why so many people who have good results from medications discontinue them...because taking a pill is associated with being sick.

For major depression most psychiatrists I work with recommend a minimum of 6 to 12 months of medication before you should even think of stopping meds...then only do so with your doc's blessings and close monitoring.

The medications help your brain cells to communicate better with each other and are likely compensating for changes in your nervous system that either cause the depression, or possibly the problem starts with an serious event in your life (ex: death of someone close or job loss) and results in altered brain function. Please be kind to yourself and don't set yourself up for relapse by quitting meds too soon.

The problem that is causing your depression could easily be taken care of by not taking the drugs but finding a natural cure for your imbalance. Try Dr Neal Neddly I may not have the last name spelled right. He has done extensive work with depression and natural cures that really do work. Then maybe you could get off the PILL forever. You doctor will probably tell you that could never happen but look up Dr Neddly's web site and see if he can help you.

Know where your depression comes from and talk it out or write about it, I think it will heal the root of your problem rather than just sort of covering it up day to day. When your doctor prescribed an antidepressant, it should have been a red flag that you need therapy as well. Medications only 'treat' depression. I remember I hated that my doctor prescribed me with an antidepressant. You are normal if you are depressed, it's just time to talk about what's bothering you, not to be given a proverbial magic pill that they think will solve all your problems. I used to have qualms about it, that this not something that major that needs medication.

It brings your chemicals to a normal level to that someone who isn't depressed. I experienced this myself and went of my meds. Long story short...I ended up having a nervous breakdown and ended up having going back on them and seeking therapy. Please don't go off your meds without a doctors supervision. Some anti-depressants you need to weened off of in order to avoid side effects like the one I had.

Good luck.
