Just because!
The imperial system is a hangover from when England first colonised USA.
The Metric system is used throughout MOST of the world and the scientific comunity.
Perhaps the USA is just a little backward?

RE: Why does America still use the imperial system? As somebody who uses the metric system since I was old enough, I don't understand pounds, ounces, inches, feet, yards or miles in the slightest (I probably missed out a few units there), nor can I convert between imperial or metric. But on this site I see a lot of these measurements being used,...

The USA "officially" went metric in the mid to late 19th Century. However...
There has been near constant pressure from the Religious Right to keep the US on the English system. Why? Because the Religious Right views the metric system as the "Mark of the Beast" told about in the Book of Revelation. They also see the EU as the Great Beast.

Canadians also drive on the right side of the road..and use the metric system. We hear tell the powers that be in the United States think the metric system is too difficult for the average American to learn..

one of the biggest conflicts in this area, at least to me as a tech major, is in the wood industry. However, as most of the high dollar machinery is from over seas, Germany and Italy for the most part, and this machinery runs with metric programming there is a large push for students that can understand the metric system, if not at least be able to convert between the two.
I would say that many of America is stubborn. and as we grew with the imperial system many refuse to make the switch. imperial has a simple measurement, but you'll find that it is not always an accurate one. especially when it comes to machinery. unless you can convert your fractions to decimals readily. the metric system has made many standards in the industry to make manufacturing easier.
I could go on about this for quite some time

I agree with Tootsie.
I mean how easy would it be for a people that still think Canadians live in igloos and all say "Eh!" to learn a new way to use math?
