If you would like to understand more about Egyptian Hieroglyphics, than I suggest you look under the following two names: 'Rosetta Stone' and 'Jean-Francois Champollion'.

On the Rosetta stone there were three sets of characters -- Greek, Coptic, and hieroglyphic.

Hieroglyphic writing first began around 5000 years ago. Egyptians wrote in hieroglyphs up to about 400 AD, after that they wrote in a short-hand cursive style called demotic. Eventually everyone forgot how to write in hieroglyphs

They were a form of writing (pictogram) used by the Ancient Egyptians in which stylised illustrations were used to represent words or phrases or ideas.
