5p + 3e = 65
3p + 2e = 40
-10p - 6e = - 130
9p + 6e = 120-----ADD
- p = - 10
p = 10
30 + 2e = 40
2e = 10
e = 5
Pencil cost is 10 (choose currency---cents or otherwise !)
Eraser cost is 5

Pencil = 10c
Eraser = 5c
5 Pencils = 5 x 10c = 50c
3 Erasers = 3 x 5c = 15c
50 + 15 = 65c
3 Pencils = 3 x 10c = 30c
2 Erasers = 2 x 5c = 10c
30 + 10 = 40c

let x be the cost of a pencil and y be the cost of an eraser
5x + 3y = .65
3x + 2y = .40
-2(5x + 3y = .65)
3(3x + 2y = .40)
-10x - 6y = -1.3
9x + 6y = 1.2
----------------------
-1x = -.1
x = $.10 or 10 cents
5(.10) + 3y = .65
3y = .15
y = .05 or 5 cents
so an pencil costs 10 cents and a eraswer cost 5 cents

Let the cost of a pencil and a eraser be $x and$y respectively
according to the problem,
5x+3y=0.65.......(eqn 1)
3x+2y=0.40........(eqn 2)
Multiplying eqn 1 by 2 and eqn 2 by 3,we get
10x+6y=1.30
9x+6y=1.20
(subtracting) x=0.10
plugging x in eqn 1 ,we get
0.50+3y=0.65
3y=0.65-0.50=0.15
y=0.15/3=0.05
therefore cost of one pencil is $0.10 and that of an eraser is $0.05
Cost of 1 pencil and 1 eraser is $0.15
