NEW YORK - Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is "ridiculous."
"You're going to relegate my history to a month?" the 68-year-old actor says in an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" to air Sunday (7 p.m. EST). "I don't want a black history month. Black history is American history."
Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's ***** History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated — when black history would become fundamental to American history. Freeman notes there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it. "The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism."I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a blackman.

I've never understood why blacks support black history month. In my opinion, it's disrespectful to blacks. To me, it's a statement that the history of black people in this country is so insignificant that it's only worth celebrating and learning/teaching for a period of one month. I also think it screams segregation. Why do we refer to history as [insert race here] history? If we separate our history we will remain separate in our future.

I agree with Freeman with the exception that I don't think we shouldn't talk about racism. We can't solve problems by ignoring them.

Ya know I have been campaigning this idea for a while now...but I am white so I usually get called racist. I agree with Morgan that labeling people "black" and "white" is an obstacle- it just seperates us all even more. I know that every culture and race has its own history month- but black history month is the only one that is really publicized. I think it is ridiculous and it is disrepectful to other races and cultures- everyone is equally important.

Freeman in 100% correct. How do you sum up thousands of years of history into 28 days?! Anyway, there is no such thing as black history. History in history. Altimately it all merges at some point.

black history month would be ridiculous if we didn't learn enough about the people we celebrate that month through the whole year. People like Rosa Parks shouldn't need a month to be learned about. I think once the ciriculum changes and we do start to learn about them in our regular classes, then it may be unnecassary, but not ridiculous.
and not talking about race isn't the way to stop racism. i am proud of my backround, and i wont stop talking about it because it is nothing to be embarassed of.
