What kind of automobile would a regular person drive during the 1940's and 50's in New York? Nothing fancy or flashy, just a common car. If it got a flat, how did a person fix it? Did they carry jacks back then?

I might sound like an idiot, but I'd really appreciate any answers. Thanks much.

If you were an average Joe, then you would have driven a Chevy, Ford or a Pontiac/Dodge/Plymouth. If you were a little higher on the scale you would have driven a Buick or Oldsmobile. A little higher yet and it would have been a Cadillac or a Continental. They all had extra spares and jacks in the trunk, or you would have taken it to the mechanic to fix the flat.

Probably a Ford or a Chevy. If it got a flat, then it was jacked up and the spare tire was put on. The flat was taken to a garage and repaired or the owner repaired it theirself.

It's not so different now, with the exception that the cars are more reliable and there are less break downs. Even the new cars carry jacks and spares when you buy them.

good luck.

Good old American cars like Chevy,Pontiac,Oldsmobile,Dodge,Plymouth and Fords. Not much foreign junk. and yes they had jacks and real spare tires not the junk that passes now a day. That's when you could get a real car not the overpriced junk they sell today.
