You don't need to out do your boyfriend right out of the gate. You will get there in time. Here are some songs to get you started.

Mudvayne - Not Falling - love this song
Slipknot - Wait and Bleed
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
Slayer - Angel of Death
Type O Negative - Christian Woman - buy their entire catalog
In This Moment - Beautiful Tragedy
Suicidal Tendencies - Join the Army - sort of a hybrid of metal and punk, GREAT BAND.
White Zombie - Black Sunshine
Lacuna Coil - Swamped - goth/metal
Machine Head - Silver (Take My Hand)

Actually, you might surpass him with this list!

Try some Killswitch Engage like The End of Heartache or My Last Serenade. Any song by In This Moment would work. Trivium's Ascendency album is a good start and so is the band All That Remains. Pantera naturally is a good choice right with 'old' Metallica. Also check out Arch Enemy, Angela's vocals are insane.....especially for a woman.

I can't believe I forgot Fear Factory. Linchpin and Slave Labor or even Invisible Wounds(Dark Bodies) are good too.

well the best advice I could give you is just start with the bands you know and just explore your own taste in metal. I began with Metallica when I was 12. I was hooked on it and I wanted more so i search for more bands. I read what bands that influenced Metallica and Begin listening to those bands. It was like a chain reaction. One band let to another and so on. It really takes time to fully get into metal. I begin with Metallica and I now love grindgore, death metal, trash metal Black metal, NWOBHM and so on.

he doesn't listen to metal, fyi

i would say you need to start off with metallica and iron maiden and slayer. those bands are classics.

But don't try to be something you are not, not everyone can understand and enjoy metal music.

im going to be a little gay here and suggest the easiest way to find decent bands .... go onto myspace under the music section and click under top artists at the top, on the page that pops up find the genre you would like to hear, and hit search.
it will list the most viewed and most listened to bands under the genre you picked. dig a little and listen to their music and find some bands you like.

and i will also suggest purevolume.com

you know how we can tell you're new to this? you're clumping together slipknot, a nu metal band, metallica, a classic thrash metal band and nirvana, a grunge band. Lesson one: contrary to popular belief, metal has subgenres. You might want to try some Thrash Metal and New Wave of British Heavy Metal, that's about the best stuff there is. With Thrash, you've got the big 4 (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) and with NWOBHM, you've got some great bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. If you're looking for more recent stuff look for alt. metal. Alt. metal bands that I would suggest are Papa Roach, System of a Down and Three Days Grace. I'll Also give you some songs so you're not totally lost. Metallica (Blackened, One, For Whom the Bells Toll, Master of Puppets, Battery) Megadeth ( Countdown to Extinction, A Tout Le Monde, Peace Sells) Slayer (Angel of Death, Jesus Saves, Dead Skin Mask) Anthrax( I'm the Man, Among the Living, Caught in a Mosh), Iron Maiden, my favorite band ever(2 minutes to midnight, die with your boots on, run to the hills, Where Eagles Dare, The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name) Judas Priest(Breaking the Law), Papa Roach( Between Angels and Insects, Broken Home) System of a Down(Cigaro, Toxicity, Chop Suey, B.Y.O.B) Three Days Grace(I hate everything about you, animal i have become)
that's about it. if you like it, just look for similar stuff and if you don't, tell your bf its just not you.

I'm not the top metalhead here, but I've heard plenty of metal. Let's go through the genres:

classic metal - very popular among older fans, the three pioneers are Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath, DP being underrated. All 3 could be considered hard rock as well. Other noteworthy old metal bands include Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Dio.

Thrash Metal - Metallica's the best known here. Megadeth is quite different. Slayer sucks lyrically but riffs are heavy and cool. Anthrax is probably the most under-rated one here. Pantera is not really thrash, but some have the band under thrash metal. This metal is another good place to get into thrash music.

Death Metal - not a favorite of mine...I do not like the "brutal" style of metal all around. There is something called melodic death metal with bands like In Flames, Soilwork, At The Gates, and Scar Symmetry. They may have influnced metalcore.

Black Metal - hate this genre...only one song by Dimmu Bogir.

Hair Metal - it was the big trend in the 80s. The scene featured a lot of crazy bands ranging from Poison to Motley Crue to Skid Row and Whitesnake and KISS. You may like most of the bands here, but a lot of them can get annoying.

Progressive Metal - it's more about compositions and style rather than just IN-YOUR-FACE metal. Opeth, Dream Theater, and Pain of Salvation are the most popular ones here. Tool is not a progressive metal band, but they have elements of metal in it to be called alternative metal. They're decent though.

Goth Metal - really decent bands here. The most famous one is Lacuna Coil, which is by far better than Evanescene (they're not even metal or gothic, but nu metal). Some bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation may be jotted down here, but they're more of symphonic metal...worth listening to though.

Metalcore - many metalheads despise this subgenre, but there are a lot of decent bands. Killswitch Engage is by far the most popular one. Avenged Sevenfold (AX7) started out as metalcore too before changing over to staight out heavy metal/hard rock. Trivium is another popular one, but are hated a lot by metalheads.

And finally, some bands that may get categorized as metal, but IMO don't have really enough elements to be considered as heavy metal. They're worth listening to though.

Alice in Chains
Soundgarden
AC/DC
Guns N' Roses
System of a Down
Deftones
Tool (I mentioned above)
Nine Inch Nails
KoRn
Faith No More
Rage Against the Machine.

This is tricky, becuase of subgenres.
Make sure you've got Metallica and Slayer, Anthrax is good too.
I personally hate hair metal.
Nu-Metal is very... hit and miss by metal fans.
One of my favorite current metal bands is The Autumn Offering.

And if you're being daring, try some Cannibal Corpse.
