One story is that since these were originally discovered by the Vikings, they named them such to avoid competition.

In other words, who would want to go settle in a place called "Iceland"? Especially if they had been to "Greenland" and saw only ice and snow!

So everyone else left Iceland alone and the Vikings and their descendants would not be bothered by invaders or settlers.

I dont know about iceland. However, Greenland was named Greenland because the first Europeans wanted to encurage more people to come to Greenland even though it was white. So they just used this name to encurage people.

Im not sure if this is really the logical explanation but heres what i think... there was this one guy who was living on greenland while it was called iceland because of the ice. he was lonely cuz he was the only one living there, so he changed icelands name to greenland and greenlands name to iceland, and then lotsa ppl moveed there but then they realized it was diff. than they had expected but they stayed anyways! :P

" called this new land "Greenland" because he "believed more people would go thither if the country had a beautiful name," according to one of the Icelandic chronicles (Hermann, 1954) although Greenland, as a whole, could not be considered "green." Additionally, the land was not very good for farming. Nevertheless, Eric was able to draw thousands to the three areas"

a settler went to iceland and it was all grass and he wanted it to himself and named it iceland so no one would want to go there and so when other people came to greenland, it was icy and iceland was green.
