Eastern Seaborad of North America. Pull out a map. They were where Massachusettes, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Georgia and Delaware are today (roughly). Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and New Hampshire were the remaining colonies, but the borders only extended to the Appalchian Mountains. New Hampshire's borders were similar but disputes over who owned Vermont make maps from the 1770s questionable. (Vermont was it's own country for a short period.)

Prior to the Seven Years War (ended 1763) the western border was the Appalachian Mountains. However English claims extended to the Ohio River Valley. Following the war, British territory expanded to the Mississippi River and colonial land claims followed. (Connecticut actually had land claims in what is now Pennsylvania.) However, expansion past the Appalachian Mountains was oficially prohibited by the Crown, farmers still settled the lands west of the Appalachians through the Revolutionary War.

The 13 original colonies were located in the New England region. The Middle Colonies region marked the western border.

The Atlantic seaboard. There were several 'regions,' including New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the South. The Appalachians more or less marked the western boundary, but only loosely so.
