I find that clothes hung outside smell fresh and clean: unless you live near a stockyard. Rather than run them through an entire wash cycle and waist water, I would put them through a rinse and spin cylce. Also, put 1/8 to 1/4 cup bleach in a quart bottle fill with water and put into rinse water to really remove any odor. I also use this method with beach towels that have not been dragged in the sand, just gotten wet.

If your laundry smells, you have to wash it again. Too much moisture can cause clothing to mildew, and that's probably what you're smelling. Also, if you put too many clothes in the wash at one time they don't get very clean, so the smell of perspiration and daily use builds up over time and eventually gets really bad. If this happens, you have to wash them again, this time using fewer items and more water.

Do you mean things you had on an outside line to dry and they got rained on? You'll have to re-wash them.
