I mean,

"Wat up wit dat?"
"I gots to go"
"Is dis how we present our country?"

I live in SC, and even some of our SCHOOL TEACHERS talk this way..... I just think it makes all of us look ignorant! And it seems like all (or at least alot) of the teens and early 20's are doing it!
Is this the future of America? I'm just wondering WHY everyone is so proud to speak and talk like they are illiterate?
What's your opinion?

What up Danny?
(Should be what's up...)
I'm not talking about abbreviations that make sense-- I'm talking about people speaking in real life, and the way they choose to spell their words on the computer--
Don't tell me it takes too long to type an "h" to go along with that "wit"......
This is a choice in the way you speak- not a shortcut. Don't deny it now!

To OmnesArs--
I'm so sorry if you misunderstood- I had NO INTENTION of saying it was black or white kids doing this--- my question is not racial at all-- ALL of the kids are doing this! White, Black, Mexican-- there are no exceptions, and I did not mean to imply that I was talking about a specific race of kids at all! But I do agree with you-- I think that is what is supposed to be KEWL now!!!

I think it's somehow viewed as being cool -- oh, I'm sorry, that should be kewl -- to mess around with the language. And let's face it, a fair number of white kids like to act black ghetto.

It would be one thing if these kids had a firm knowledge of correct spelling/syntax/punctuation and were just kidding around. But they don't, so these bad habits become the norm for them. It's sad and frightening -- they're never going to get a decent job with such a bad grasp of communications.

A school teacher doing this should be firmly reprimanded. They're probably trying to connect with their students, but all they're doing is pandering to them.

I never did that and i'm 18. I know exactly what you're talking about that. Personally I don't think it saves you much energy to type "that" instead of "dat"... 1 letter? come on!! I really don't even talk like that, so bothering to type it is a different issue.

It's 'spell badly', not spell bad.
It's also 'a lot', not alot
But, no. Communication is the important thing. Literacy is NOT a human instinct. In Shakespeare's day, pronouns in the nominative case could be used in the objective case. "They hate we youth!" Verbs also had not settled entirely into set conjugations. So as English changes, transmitting ideas is the important thing.
